Bude has accomplished a remarkable feat by achieving the triple distinction – 3 Blue Flag Awards! Three of our beloved beaches, namely Widemouth Bay, Crooklets, and Summerleaze (for the first time), have been granted both the esteemed Blue Flag and Seaside Awards. That means Bude has 1/3rd of the Blue Flag beaches for all of Cornwall!

The Blue Flag is an internationally recognized accolade, bestowed upon only 77 beaches in the UK that meet the highest required standards. Bude has managed to secure this distinction for three beaches within a three-mile stretch.

To attain Blue Flag Awards status, beaches are evaluated based on various criteria, including:

1. Safety and services, such as the availability of first aid and lifeguards where necessary.
2. Provision of environmental information, such as displaying details about local ecosystems.
3. Water quality – Blue Flag beaches must meet the “excellent” water quality standard set out in the EU bathing water directive, while Seaside Award winners must meet the “sufficient” standard.
4. Environmental management, encompassing aspects like litter and waste control.
